Police officer in critical condition is Defence Minister's daughter

Police officer in critical condition is Defence Minister's daughter
The female police officer who was hit by a car with drug and robbery suspects, and now in critical condition, is the daughter of Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua.

She is admitted at the CWM Hospital.

The Minister released a statement from parliament and says his daughter was struck and sustained injuries, and is currently in hospital and remains in a serious and stable condition.

He says the incident will be dealt with, and is requesting the public to allow the police to finish their investigations.

Tikoduadua says his focus remains on his daughter's recovery and also supporting the officers to continue their duties to keep Fiji safe.

Another officer who was also injured in the same incident is admitted in stable condition.

This follows the police vehicle chase yesterday morning, following the seizure of white substances believed to be methamphetamine at the Laqere checkpoint.

Three people remain under arrest.

Police say the joint operations team manning the Laqere checkpoint had directed the vehicle to stop, but the driver refused, and police pursued the suspects towards the Tovata/Makoi area.

They say the suspects drove back towards Suva, where they drove into the roadblock and hit a police officer.

The chase ended with a multiple-vehicle collision between police and the suspects, a few metres from the Laqere checkpoint.

The three suspects, one of whom has a known criminal history, are admitted at the CWM Hospital under police guard.

Police say a search conducted in the suspect's vehicle resulted in the seizure of white substances believed to be methamphetamine and alleged house break-in tools.

The joint police and military task force will continue its surge operations, and they warn that such attacks on members of the operations team will not be taken lightly.
