Ratu Epeli will be remembered as the servant of the people - Roko Tui Bau

To the nation, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau was a symbol of selfless humanity—a champion for the underprivileged. Though born into a legacy of leadership, he chose to forge his own path, defined by discipline, service, and integrity.

These sentiments were shared by the Roko Tui Bau, Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua, while delivering the family’s eulogy during the funeral service this morning at Albert Park.

He says it was during Ratu Epeli’s formative years at Levuka Public School that he formed lifelong friendships and developed a natural affinity for people of all races and backgrounds.

Ratu Timoci urged Fijians not to rush to canonise his memory, noting that Ratu Epeli stood tall as a man of unique character.

He says to sanctify him would risk overlooking the very essence of who he was—especially his warmth, sense of humour, and that familiar smile.

He adds that only in his passing do many truly realise what has been lost, and that life without Ratu Epeli will not be the same.

The Roko Tui Bau says while the nation grieves, it is the strength of Ratu Epeli’s message—shaped through years of service—that will guide people forward.

Ratu Timoci described him as a loving husband and father, a statesman, a soldier, and a diplomat—but above all, a servant of the people.

He says the nation has come together not only to mourn his passing, but to honour a life lived with dignity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the vanua and the people of Fiji.

Ratu Epeli has been laid to rest at the sacred burial ground on Bau Island.
