Public consultations have begun on the proposed Waste-to-Energy project in Vuda as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change continues its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) review process.

The first consultation was held yesterday at Viseisei Village, with Tui Vuda, Ratu Eparama Tavaiqia, present as traditional leaders and affected communities took part in the discussion.

While opening the session, Permanent Secretary, Dr Sivendra Michael outlined the EIA process and the legal requirements that guide development approvals.

He stressed that public consultation is a key part of the approval process, providing a platform for communities to raise concerns, ask questions, and directly engage with developers and government officials.

Residents from Saweni and Vuda, including business operators, attended to seek clarification on the proposed project and its potential impacts.

The Ministry has also clarified that written submissions and public consultations are separate processes conducted within the review period.

They say that while written submissions allow individuals and organisations to formally present their views, public consultations provide a space for direct engagement with developers and relevant government agencies.

Meanwhile, the EIA document remains available for public viewing until Wednesday, 22nd April, in accordance with legal requirements.

Consultations will continue today at 2pm at the proposed project site in Naikorokoro, and people are urged to participate.
