Serious concerns have been raised over the sharing of images of a deceased individual on social media, and the Online Safety Commission says such images are highly distressing, show the deceased in a vulnerable and exposed state, and have caused further pain and trauma to grieving family members and loved ones during an already difficult time.
The Commission is deeply concerned by the circulation of such graphic images and urges the public to refrain from sharing, reposting, forwarding or publishing such material across any social media platform, messaging application or online forum.
They say the Commission recognises the strong public concern surrounding the circumstances of the death and acknowledges the importance of lawful, independent processes being allowed to proceed fully and transparently.
They also say that regardless of the circumstances surrounding a person's death, every individual is entitled to dignity and respect.
The Commission adds that the unnecessary circulation of graphic images of the deceased not only undermines that dignity but can also cause serious emotional distress to surviving family members and affected persons.
The Commission is reminding the public that under the Online Safety Act 2018, online conduct that causes serious harm to others may raise concerns under the law.
They are encouraging all social media users to consider the emotional harm and wider consequences that may arise from sharing graphic and sensitive material online.
They say the widespread circulation of these images also risks further traumatising affected family members while official processes remain ongoing.
They also say that public discussion and scrutiny should not come at the expense of basic human dignity and compassion, and they remind users that social media platforms are not exempt from standards of humanity, decency and responsibility.
The Commission adds that in moments of grief and national sensitivity, restraint and empathy must prevail over sensationalism and speculation.
They call on all persons currently in possession of the images to immediately cease further circulation and urge social media administrators and platform operators to take prompt action to prevent continued dissemination of the material.
