Government is moving ahead with plans to strengthen sports and community infrastructure in Ovalau, with the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the historic Nasau Park Pavilion in Levuka.

Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumis says the project reflects Government’s commitment to improving public facilities that support sports development, community activities and the preservation of Fiji’s heritage.

He says the pavilion upgrade is funded through the Coalition Government grant assistance and will be carried out by 4K Construction at a cost of $226,965.31.

It is expected to be completed within 15 weeks.

Once completed, the Minister says the upgraded facility will include seating for up to 250 people, upgraded male and female amenities, and improved changing rooms with showers and toilets to better cater for sporting events, community gatherings and public use.

Nalumisa says the improved pavilion will benefit 23 villages and four tikina on Ovalau, while also creating revenue opportunities for the Levuka Town Council through venue hire.

He says parks and recreational facilities play an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles, strengthening communities and preserving Fiji’s heritage.

Nasau Park holds historic significance as one of Fiji’s earliest civic open spaces and has long served as a centre for sport and recreation, including being home to the Levuka Football Club and Ovalau Rugby Club. Competitive football in Fiji was first played there in 1904 during celebrations marking the golden jubilee of the Deed of Cession.

The government has also allocated $483,400 in the 2025 to 2026 financial year to support capital projects and solid waste management services for the Levuka Town Council.
