New Ministry of Environment plan to strengthen Fiji’s climate and environment efforts

New Ministry of Environment plan to strengthen Fiji’s climate and environment efforts

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has officially launched its Strategic Development Plan 2026–2031 and new ministry website, marking a major step towards building a more sustainable and climate-resilient Fiji.

Speaking at the launch at Tanoa Plaza Hotel, Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya says, the plan is the first integrated strategy combining the work of the Department of Environment and the Department of Climate Change under one ministry.

She says the plan represents a strategic reset for the newly unified ministry, focused on creating a clean, healthy and resilient Fiji.

Tabuya says consultations with communities and stakeholders highlighted the need for services to be more accessible and people-focused.

She added that the strategy aims to strengthen climate resilience, protect natural resources, improve partnerships and governance, and support evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development.

Tabuya also acknowledged the support of the New Zealand Government, the United Nations Development Programme and Talanoa Consulting in developing the strategy, while urging ministry staff to turn the plan into action for future generations.
