A more sustainable and diversified agriculture sector could soon become a reality following Cabinet’s approval for the European Union to undertake a feasibility study into alternative high-value crops and livestock systems for sugarcane farmers.
The study will look at the long-term sustainability and performance of the sugar industry, while also identifying practical alternative farming opportunities for sugarcane growers.
It will assess ways to improve productivity, strengthen farmers’ resilience, and create better income opportunities.
The study will also explore options to boost food security, reduce dependence on imports, and build stronger links between agriculture and important sectors such as tourism.
Government says the initiative is expected to help develop a stronger and more diverse agriculture sector, improve livelihoods in rural communities, and support sustainable economic growth.
The findings are also expected to help shape future policies and guide investment decisions aimed at transforming Fiji’s agriculture sector.
