A resident of Labasa has raised concerns about the future of Indian families residing on lease land after their agricultural leases expire in 10 years.
During a National Federation Party meeting in Labasa, concerned resident Vidya Wati says many families are worried about their future and claims some agricultural leases in Vunivau are being converted into residential blocks.
She says the descendants of the Girmitiyas have worked tirelessly in sugar cane farming for generations and played a major role in keeping the sugar industry alive.
Wati is urging the Government to consider renewing all leases that are expected to expire within the next decade.
Responding to the concerns, National Federation Party Leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad says the Government is working on lease renewal matters.
He says around 80 percent of leases have already been renewed.
However, he also explains that some leases located near towns are being utilised by the iTaukei Land Trust Board for development and other purposes.
He adds that false information is being spread regarding lease expiries and assures the public that the Government continues to address the issue.
