The Fiji Ports Terminal Limited is seeking a review of its existing tariff structure following increased operational cost pressures linked to recent global fuel market volatility. The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission says they received a formal submission from the Fiji Ports Terminal Limited regarding this, and FCCC is currently reviewing the detailed submission, and no determination has been made as yet.

The Commission says they are mindful that any change to port fees will affect the price of everyday goods and services that Fijians rely on, especially since the majority of Fiji’s imports pass through these ports. The FCCC says the submission indicates that escalating fuel prices has pushed its costs up to the point where it can no longer absorb them within its current budget. They say they have sought FCCC’s consideration for an adjustment to the regulated tariff structure. The Commission says they acknowledge the importance of Fiji Ports Terminal Limited within Fiji’s supply chain and broader economy, particularly given its role in facilitating the movement of imports and exports through the country’s maritime gateway. They add that given the ongoing volatility in global fuel markets, FCCC intends to undertake the assessment in a timely manner while ensuring that all relevant data, stakeholder views, and broader market implications are carefully considered. The FCCC says that as part of this process, they will consult with key industry groups, government agencies, and consumer representatives to make sure all views are heard before any decision is made. They say FCCC’s assessment will consider the justification provided in support of the submission, the potential impact on regulated operations, and the broader implications for businesses and consumers. The FCCC adds that the review process will focus on ensuring that any outcome is proportionate, evidence-based, and mindful of both operational sustainability and consumer impact. The Commission assures the public that any determination arising from the review process will be evidencebased assessment of the data provided, reflecting their commitment to transparent regulatory decisions made in the best interests of the people and the economy of Fiji in accordance with its statutory mandate.
