Commission not drafting new Constitution - CRC Chair

Chair of the Constitution Review Commission, Sevuloni Ratumaiyale Valenitabua, has made it clear that they are not looking to introduce a new Constitution for Fiji.

While speaking to the media this morning, Valenitabua says their role is to review the 2013 Constitution to determine which provisions should be removed, amended, or slightly changed.

He says they have a team called the Public Awareness and Civic Education (PACE) team, which is currently out in communities conducting awareness on the work of the Commission.

The Chair adds that from May 4th to July 2nd, they will be conducting public consultations around Fiji.

Valenitabua also highlighted that there have been a lot of questions regarding the legality of the operations of the Constitution Review Commission.

He says their legal basis is that Cabinet decided to amend the Constitution, and the President appointed them under Section 2 of the Commissioners of Enquiry Act.

He says this is not something that was simply decided without proper process.

The Chair also acknowledged the media for their coverage of the consultations and for informing the public on what is being discussed.

Meanwhile, two teams from the Constitution Review Commission will conduct public consultations from next month through to July.

Team 1 will conduct consultations in parts of Lau and Lomaiviti from May 4th to 15th, while Team 2 will be in Beqa, Vatulele, Ovalau, and Kadavu from May 4th to 13th.

From May 19th to 27th, consultations will be held in Cakaudrove. From June 1st to 10th, the team will be in Namosi, Serua, Nadroga, Ba, and Ra.

Consultations will continue in Tailevu from June 15th to 22nd, followed by the greater Suva area from June 23rd to 27th. On July 1st and 2nd, consultations will be held in Rotuma.
