Shane Flanagan sacked as St George Illawarra Dragons head coach

Just eight months after the Dragons handed him a two-year contract extension, the last-placed club confirmed that they are parting ways this morning.

Flanagan paid the price for a miserable run of form in which the joint venture team have lost their first seven games of the season and 11 in a row, including the end of their 2025 campaign.

Flanagan’s exit was sealed by a 30-12 defeat to the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday night.

Dragons General Manager of Football Ben Haran has also departed the club.

Club officials had been mindful about Flanagan’s well-being, with the coach appearing emotionally drained by the constant speculation about his future, as well as the impact on his family, including his son and Dragons playmaker, Kyle Flanagan.

Flanagan had been diplomatic about his immediate future when asked multiple times in recent weeks.

Flanagan was in charge of Cronulla Sharks when they won their only premiership a decade ago, and took over the Dragons, a club he once played for, at the start of the 2024 season.
