The Fiji Rugby Union and FIJI Water Flying Fijians Head Coach Mick Byrne have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately while Senirusi Seruvakula has been appointed as the interim coach.
The FRU says following discussions about the future direction of the Flying Fijian program, both parties concluded that it is in the best interests of Fiji Rugby to part ways.
They have thanked Byrne for his dedication, passion, and contribution to Fijian rugby over the past five years.
FRU says Byrne's impact on the Flying Fijians and Drua has helped lay a strong foundation for the future.
Fiji Rugby CEO, Koli Sewabu says Byrne has been fully committed to his role and remains dedicated to the players and staff.
He says out of respect for the team and to ensure the program can continue to the new direction that Fiji Rugby has set for the future, Byrne and Fiji Rugby have agreed to part ways so FRU can move forward.
FRU says on behalf of the players, management, and the entire Fijian rugby family, they offer a heartfelt vinaka vakalevu for his dedication, passion, and service.
They have also acknowledged the foundation he has helped build and under his guidance, from the Fijian Drua to the Flying Fijians, FRU has seen growth, resilience, and a commitment to the white jersey that will serve them well moving forward.
FRU says these are not simply moments in a season, but pillars for our future success.
He also confirms Senirusi Seruvakula will be coach in the interim and will be taking the team through to the Rugby Nations Championship in July this year.
Sewabu says Seruvakula is a name synonymous with excellence, discipline and the very soul of our sport.
He says he brings a wealth of experience spanning the domestic scene and the highest levels of international representation.
Sewabu says there will be no adjustment period needed when it comes to understanding the character, strengths and aspirations of this squad.
He says Seruvakula stepping into this role is a testament to the depth of coaching talent we have cultivated locally and exposed to the global stage.
The CEO says their immediate focus is clear where Seruvakula will lead the Flying Fijians into the Nations Championship in July and will play a key role in building the team towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
During this period, he says they will also open the recruitment process to address the long-term needs of the Flying Fijians.
Byrne says it has been an honour to work with the Flying Fijians players and staff and before that the Drua players and staff.
He says he is overwhelmed by the support of ‘the world’s best’ Fiji fans during his 5-year involvement and their warmth and welcome have meant a great deal to him.
Byrne adds he remains fully committed to the game and wish Fiji Rugby every success moving forward.
