The National Fire Authority says that preliminary investigations into the fire that occured at Yat Sen Primary School in Flagstaff yesterday afternoon have confirmed that it was caused by sparks from welding works being carried out on the roof, which ignited combustible materials within the ceiling.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane has expressed serious concern over the incident, warning that such occurrences highlight ongoing lapses in basic fire safety practices.
He says this incident is deeply concerning, particularly as it occurred in a school environment where the safety of children and educators must always be the highest priority.
Sowane says fires that originate in concealed spaces such as ceilings can spread rapidly and often go undetected until it is too late.
He stressed that while this fire was linked to welding activities, electrical fires continue to be among the leading causes of structural fires in the country, and similar negligence can result in devastating consequences.
The CEO adds that these incidents are preventable and there must always be strict adherence to safety procedures.
The NFA is calling on all contractors, property managers, and members of the public to take greater responsibility when undertaking any form of hot work or electrical installations.
Some key fire safety reminders are to always obtain proper authorisation and risk assessment before carrying out welding or cutting works, remove or shield all flammable materials from work areas, keep appropriate fire extinguishers readily accessible, regularly inspect and maintain electrical wiring and appliances, and never overload power outlets or use damaged electrical equipment.
The Authority reiterates that early reporting is critical in preventing loss of life and property.
