Yaqara workers on strike agree in principle to meet employer after Ministry steps in

Yaqara workers on strike agree in principle to meet employer after Ministry steps in
The representative for 34 workers of Yaqara Pastoral Company PTE Ltd, who have been on a strike since yesterday over unpaid Cost of Living Adjustment, have agreed in principle to meet the employers and discuss the matters in dispute with the intention of reaching an amicable resolution.

The Ministry of Employment confirms the workers, who are members of the National Union of Workers went on strike from 8am yesterday at company’s premises in Yaqara, Tavua.

They say the strike action was due to concerns regarding outstanding employment entitlements, workplace safety provisions and non-compliance with agreed employment terms and conditions.

The Ministry says the Union had obtained more than 81 percent strike mandate following a secret strike ballot on February 9th.

The Ministry says their officials met with the Union and the employer separately and arrangements are currently underway to finalise the meeting details.

They say the Ministry will be advised once a date is confirmed.

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh highlighted that the Ministry would continue to monitor the situation closely and encourages both parties to engage in constructive dialogue in the interest of maintaining industrial harmony.
