The Vanua o Vuda has introduced a 8-month ban on the consumption of alcohol, yaqona, drugs, and tobacco and for those aged 45 and under, after witnessing the impact of drugs on young people in the country.

Speaking to fijivillage News, Turaga ni Koro of Viseisei Village, Inoke Momoedonu says the decision was approved during the Bose Vanua of Vuda as they want to stop and prevent the destruction caused by drugs, as youths are the future generation.

Momoedonu says the ‘taboo’ or ban will be in place for eight months, starting from this month.

The Vanua will reach out to police and other stakeholders to run campaigns and awareness programs in the five villages.

The Vanua o Vuda consists of five villages Viseisei, Lauwaki, Lomolomo, Abaca, and Namara.

He adds that another ongoing ‘taboo’ restricts vehicle movement from 10pm on Saturdays, and it has been observed that people are complying with it.

He says the Vanua has not yet decided what actions will be taken if people breach the ‘taboo’.
