The University of Fiji has celebrated a major milestone, marking its 21st anniversary with a week-long programme of events highlighting its growth, achievements and impact on higher education in Fiji and the Pacific.
Celebrations were held throughout the week at the University’s Central Campus in Suva, culminating in the main anniversary event at its Saweni Campus, where the institution was first established.
While delivering the keynote address, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro described the anniversary as a celebration of perseverance and nation-building, noting the University’s vision dates back to 1956 before becoming a reality in 2005.
Radrodro says reaching 21 years is not just about marking time, it is about celebrating a journey of vision, resilience and achievement, emphasising the University’s role in shaping graduates who contribute meaningfully to Fiji’s development.
He highlighted that the impact of the University is reflected not only in academic achievements but in lives transformed, communities strengthened and a nation built through graduates working across key sectors.
Radrodro also acknowledged the University’s international standing through its accreditation by the UK-based Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, which has been extended until March 2028, ensuring globally recognised qualifications for its graduates.
He reaffirmed Government’s continued support for higher education, including plans to support student accommodation for the University.
National President of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Arun Padarath says the University’s journey reflects decades of vision and commitment to accessible, culturally grounded education.
He described the institution as one built on “vision, sacrifice, commitment and a clear belief in the transformative power of education,” acknowledging the contributions of founding members, staff, donors and supporters.
He says a university grows because people believe in it and paid tribute to those whose dedication laid the foundation for the institution’s success.
Padarath also acknowledged the continued support of the Government of Fiji and key stakeholders in strengthening the University’s academic programmes and infrastructure.
Pro-Chancellor Pt. Bhuwan Dutt reflected on the University’s evolution from concept to reality, noting its establishment in 2004 and the start of classes in 2005.
He also highlighted the longstanding role of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji in advancing education and acknowledged the collective efforts of leaders, donors, staff and partners who contributed to the University’s growth.
The Pro-Chancellor also emphasised the University’s founding principles of service, equality in education and the promotion of human values, noting that these continue to guide its development.
The celebrations also featured the unveiling of an exhibition dedicated to Pt Vishnu Deo now permanently displayed on the walls of the Pt V.D. Memorial Hall, honouring his legacy as a pioneering leader, educationist and advocate for social justice in Fiji.
Vice-Chancellor Shaista Shameem described Pt Vishnu Deo as a revolutionary figure whose vision, courage and commitment to equality helped shape education and political thought in Fiji, noting that his legacy continues to inspire the University’s mission and its commitment to empowering communities through knowledge, leadership and service.
Over the past 21 years, the University has grown into a regional institution, welcoming students from across Fiji and the Pacific while contributing to professional development, cultural understanding and nation-building.
The celebrations also highlighted its commitment to cultural preservation and language, including the promotion of Hindi and iTaukei studies.
The 21st anniversary reaffirmed the University’s mission to educate, empower and uplift communities as it continues to grow as a centre of excellence for higher education in Fiji and the Pacific.
