Two pilots dead after Air Canada plane collides with firefighting vehicle at New York airport

Two pilots have died after an Air Canada plane collided with a firefighting vehicle on a runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

The plane, carrying 73 passengers and four crew, had initially landed safely from Montreal on Sunday evening before the incident occurred.

A total of 41 passengers and crew were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from broken bones to bruising, with all but nine having since been discharged.

A flight attendant was found alive on the ground by rescuers, still strapped to her seat after it fell through the floor of the damaged plane.

Two firefighters are reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.

LaGuardia Airport was closed for hours after the crash, stranding many passengers.

In audio recorded seconds before the crash, air traffic controllers can be heard frantically telling the vehicle to stop.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has addressed the investigation and stated that his office is in close contact with federal, state and local partners.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney says his thoughts are with the victims of the crash, their families and everyone affected.

He adds that Canadian officials are on the ground, working closely with US authorities to investigate the incident.
