Special Committee on Sugar yet to convene - Rabuka
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that the Special Committee on Sugar has not yet convened.
This comes as the Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu raised concerns regarding a report from the Committee.

Seruiratu says no explanation has been provided to Parliament or to the people of Fiji which was expected to be tabled in November.

He says the failure to table the Special Committee’s report reflects a lack of political will and a lack of genuine interest by the Prime Minister in the survival of this vital industry.

Seruiratu adds farmers and workers deserve answers, not silence.

While responding to questions by fijivillage News, Rabuka says once the Committee meets and finalises its recommendations, its report will be tabled in Parliament.

He says at that point, sugarcane farmers and industry workers will have their questions addressed in a clear and comprehensive manner.

Meanwhile, the Parliament had unanimously agreed to establish a Special Committee on the Sugar Industry to undertake a comprehensive review and provide strategic recommendations for its transformation and long-term sustainability in July last year.
