Defending McDonald's Coral Coast Fiji 7s Youth champions, Southland Broncos, had to dig deep in their opening match to defeat JVJQ Brothers 19-17 this morning.
JVJQ Brothers started strong, scoring two tries in the first two minutes from Apimeleki Ciqila and former RKS U18 captain Lemeki Ravukivuki to lead 10-0.
The defending champions responded with a try from Kilioni Vuniwaqa to close the gap to 10-5 at halftime.
Pio Romanu then crossed over for JVJQ Brothers to extend their lead to 17-7, but the Broncos banded together and managed to score two tries from Waisake Sawailagi and Benedito Finau to take a 19-17 lead.
The match came down to the very last minute, with the ball knocked on by both sides.
In other results, Shogun Fiji Highlanders thrashed Japan SDS 31-7, Sunnybank Dragons defeated Aqua Pro Savuiqali 12-5, Birdland Brothers thumped Village Boys 22-0, Axellerate Dominion Brothers drew with Coastal Tubarua Highlanders 12-all, and Taveuni Grassroots Fiji thrashed Sydney Bula 7s 31-0.
In the Women's results this morning, China 2 defeated Briars 17-7, China 1 beat Lillian Amazon 26-17, and Fijiana 7s thrashed Manly Mermaids 42-0.
