Strengthening trust, unity and inclusion across Fiji’s diverse communities remains critical in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
This was highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at the National Social Cohesion Stakeholder conference in Suva today, who stressed the importance of social cohesion in maintaining national stability, noting that it is grounded in relationships, mutual respect and shared accountability.
Rabuka says social cohesion operates along two key dimensions, vertical and horizontal.
He says vertical cohesion refers to the level of trust between citizens and the state, including confidence in institutions, governance processes and service delivery.
Horizontal cohesion, meanwhile, focuses on relationships between individuals and communities across different social, cultural and religious groups.
Rabuka says both dimensions are essential in building a secure and inclusive nation, particularly at a time when global challenges such as economic instability, climate change and shifting geopolitical dynamics continue to test national resilience.
He stresses that fostering trust, dignity and confidence in public institutions is critical, while also encouraging stronger connections and understanding between communities.
The Prime Minister also noted that Fiji’s approach to peace and security is rooted in cooperation and dialogue rather than division, adding that strong social bonds are key to addressing emerging challenges and preventing instability.
He points to the importance of acknowledging the past as part of the country’s ongoing reconciliation efforts, describing initiatives such as the Truth and Reconciliation process as necessary steps towards healing and unity.
Rabuka says inclusive governance and equitable opportunities are central to strengthening social cohesion, noting that when people feel heard and respected, societies are better equipped to withstand misinformation, fragmentation and conflict.
