The Suva City Council has confirmed that garbage collection services will resume today, with operations focused on completing the missed collections efficiently.
This follows concerns raised by residents after garbage was not collected yesterday as the council staff were not at work.
People raised the issue on why the council staff were told to stay home as they should be seen as essential workers to deal with the garbage after a weather system.
The Council says that garbage collection originally scheduled for yesterday will now take place today after being postponed due to adverse weather conditions linked to Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.
Suva City Council Chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa says the decision was made as a precautionary measure in response to weather warnings, with the Council taking heed of advisories issued by the National Disaster Risk Management Office.
He says an earlier notice was also communicated through the SCC’s official Facebook platform to keep the public informed.
He adds that the safety and dignity of staff remain the Council’s top priority.
Boseiwaqa says they appreciate the understanding and cooperation of ratepayers as the Council works to restore full services promptly following the adverse weather conditions.
He says clean-up efforts yesterday were concentrated mainly within the Central Business District to maintain public health and safety in high-traffic areas.
He is requesting residents to store rubbish neatly and securely until collection is completed.
The SCC has expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation shown during this period.
