For three families in Narata Village along Valley Road in Nadroga, yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony was more than just the start of construction, it marked the beginning of a safer and more secure chapter in their lives.
Currently living in a high-risk red zone, the families will be relocated through a USD $100,000 grant made possible by a partnership between the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Global Centre for Climate Mobility Community Climate Adaptation Facility.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya expressed appreciation to the Global Centre for Climate Mobility for establishing a funding mechanism that enables communities directly impacted by climate change to access meaningful and timely support.
She says the next phase will involve finalising relocation plans and moving the families from the vulnerable area to safer ground.
Tabuya acknowledged that relocation can be a difficult process and encouraged continued solidarity within the community.
She says, let us stand together in unity and take action for the safety and future of our people.
Tabuya says Narata is the second of three communities in Fiji, alongside Macuata-i-Wai and Vuniniudrovu, to receive USD $100,000 each under the global initiative, which aims to support communities on the frontline of climate change.
