The Fiji Roads Authority has confirmed that a team has been deployed to check the Nailawa Bridge in Tailevu after it collapsed yesterday due to heavy rain and rising water levels.

The FRA says initial assessments have been completed, and restoration work will begin as soon as the water recedes and it is safe for machinery to access the site.

They say a digger will be transported from Suva to assist with reinstating the crossing.

The authority says it remains committed to fully restoring access for the Nailawa community once weather conditions improve and it is safe for engineers and contractors to proceed.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau says his ministry is working closely with the FRA on the damaged infrastructure.

Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka visited Nailawa Bridge on Sunday with the Commissioner Central Josefa Navuku and Provincial Administration Tailevu Lagi Vusoniceva.

In a statement on social media, they were briefed by Fiji Roads Authority that restoration works are being facilitated.

The Ministry says they are working with relevant stakeholders and key government ministries in ensuring that access to and from the villages of Vorovoro, Natadradave, and Delakado is restored as soon as possible.
