Rakiraki parent urges responsible use of back-to-school funds

Rakiraki parent urges responsible use of back-to-school funds
A concerned parent from Rakiraki is urging parents to use the $200 Back-to-School assistance support wisely after it was released last Friday.

Chris Kumar says he has seen people in past years spending the money on alcohol and groceries instead of school supplies.

He expressed gratitude to the government, saying the assistance helps parents meet their children's school-related expenses.

Kumar is encouraging parents to use the money to buy essential items such as school bags, books, and uniforms.

He says he has already started purchasing supplies for his daughter, who will be starting Year 1.

While he notes that the cost of items like stationery has increased compared to previous years, Kumar says he has still managed to save enough to ensure his six-year-old daughter is well-prepared for school.

He also wished all students the best as they get ready for the new school year.

Meanwhile, around $37 million has been allocated in the 2025–2026 National Budget for the programme, which is aimed at easing the financial burden on families and ensuring every child starts the school year fully equipped.
