Queen Victoria School’s Mosese Koroitunidau has broken a 7-year Tailevu Zone record in the senior boys triple jump.
Koroitunidau surpassed the previous record of 14.22 metres set by Ratu Kadavulevu School’s Joe Vokiti in 2018, recording a new mark of 12.24 metres during the competition at the HFC Bank Stadium.The Year 13 student and House Prefect, who hails from Matasawalevu in Nakasaleka, Kadavu, also won silver in the triple jump event at last year’s Coca-Cola Games.
Speaking after his win, Koroitunidau dedicated his achievement to his late grandfather, his parents and supporters who continue to motivate him.
He says he is grateful to God for the good weather and the opportunity to compete.
He says he prepared for about four weeks after the inter-house competition, which included early morning and afternoon training sessions while balancing his academic work.
Koroitunidau admits that managing both school and training was a challenge but says everything went smoothly overall.
He adds that he did not expect to break the record, as his main goal was to secure a medal.
Koroitunidau says he is thankful to have achieved the milestone and set a new record for the Tailevu Zone.
Looking ahead to the Coca-Cola Games, he says he plans to reset his mindset, noting that the level of competition will be much higher.
He also hopes to represent Fiji in the future but remains focused on the upcoming Games.
Meanwhile, Queen Victoria School dominated the boys' division of the Tailevu Zone Athletics Competition, finishing on top of the medal tally with 29 gold, 26 silver and 21 bronze medals for a total of 76.
Ratu Kadavulevu School came in second, while Tailevu North College finished third.
In the girls' division, Tailevu North College led the medal tally with 17 gold, 20 silver and 17 bronze medals for a total of 54.
Wainibuka Secondary School finished second, while Dawasamu Secondary School came third.
