There is no tsunami threat for the Fiji group after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia this morning, prompting tsunami warnings across several countries.

The quake hit the Northern Molucca Sea near the city of Ternate, according to the United States Geological Survey.

It struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Authorities say the epicentre was located about 120 kilometres from Ternate, a coastal city in Indonesia's North Maluku province with a population of more than 200,000.

The US Tsunami Warning System has warned that hazardous tsunami waves could impact coastlines within a 1000-kilometre radius of the epicentre, including parts of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
