Residents of Maumi Village in Bau, Tailevu, now have a safe and accessible refuge during disasters following the opening of a new multi-purpose evacuation centre, which will protect more than 40 households from storm surges and other climate-related threats.

Turaga ni Koro Jone Lacarua says Maumi Village has long been vulnerable to storm surges and previously lacked a proper evacuation centre.

He says that in the past, villagers sought shelter in churches, and evacuations were particularly challenging for persons with disabilities due to the close proximity of houses.

He adds that they are deeply grateful for the assistance, noting that while the current generation benefits directly, future generations will benefit even more.

The $739,023 facility was officially opened by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka.

Ditoka thanked the Vanua and people of Maumi for their patience, cooperation, and strong sense of ownership, saying the facility was built to meet community needs and should be cared for as a shared resource for present and future generations.

He says the centre reflects the Government’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable development and strengthened disaster resilience.

The Minister also acknowledged the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for facilitating the project and working closely with the community to ensure high technical standards.
