The village of Namelimeli in Namosi is driving its own development through funds earned from land leases, with villagers working together to build key infrastructure without relying on government assistance.
The villagers of Namelimeli are collectively pursuing development projects, including the construction of a village hall as well as churches for the Methodist and Seventh-day Adventist congregations.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Turaga ni Koro Joseva Romalamala said the village does not depend on government funding for its projects, instead utilising available resources, particularly land leases to generate income for development.
Romalamala says the government has larger national issues to address, and villagers believe they can contribute towards meeting their own development needs.
He further says that the village is affected by climate change.
The Turaga ni Koro said that during high tides, large waves now reach the village, and residents are planning to fund the construction of a seawall.
Romalamala also revealed that the village has subdivided portions of its land for leasing, with PRB Housing leasing 10 acres to build rental homes.
He adds that other companies are also leasing village land, and funds generated from these developments are being saved and reinvested into ongoing village development.
