Homeowners with mortgaged properties under the Housing Authority’s Group Property Insurance policy are being urged to follow strict safety guidelines when storing fuel at home.
The Authority has reiterated that insurance coverage applies only to normal household use and does not extend to properties where fuel is stored in excessive quantities beyond what is reasonably required for everyday domestic purposes.
The Authority warns that keeping large amounts of fuel at home not only poses significant safety risks but may also breach national regulations, as highlighted by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Consumer Council of Fiji.
Homeowners are further cautioned that insurance claims could be rejected if excessive fuel storage is found to have contributed to damage or loss.
Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer Isikeli Navuda stresses the importance of adhering to safe practices, saying the safety of customers and their homes remains the Authority’s top priority.
He is urging homeowners to avoid storing fuel beyond normal household needs, warning that excessive storage increases risk and may affect the outcome of insurance claims.
He is advising customers to store only the amount of fuel necessary for everyday use and to ensure full compliance with all safety requirements and legal obligations.
