Meta and YouTube fined USD$3m after being found liable in social media addiction case

Meta and YouTube fined USD$3m after being found liable in social media addiction case
PC: BBC News

A Los Angeles jury has found Meta and YouTube liable for contributing to a young woman’s social media addiction and mental health harm.

The 20-year-old, identified as Kaley, was awarded US$3 million in damages.

Jurors ruled Meta was 70 percent responsible, while YouTube was 30 percent responsible.

Kaley’s lawyers argued the platforms were designed to be addictive and failed to prevent underage use.

She told the court she began using YouTube at six and Instagram at nine, later developing anxiety, depression and body image issues.

Meta and Google have both rejected the verdict and plan to appeal.

The case could impact hundreds of similar lawsuits in the United States.
