Lautoka students awarded Westpac education grants for empowering young girls

Several students from Lautoka were recognised as recipients of the 2025 Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant, with support from teachers and families described as instrumental in helping young Fijian girls strive toward their goals.

Among the winners were best friends Shreya Kumar and Diksha Mala, Year 7 students from Lautoka Andhra Sangam, who were awarded grants under the Primary School category.

According to Westpac, the girls had applied together and were presented with their certificates during a ceremony held at the Westpac Lautoka Branch in December last year.

Shreya Kumar shares that she felt proud upon hearing she had won and credited her teacher, Ms Naicker, and her mother for encouraging her to believe in herself.

Diksha Mala explains that their interest in the programme was sparked after watching a TikTok video posted by Shania Singh adding, the experience of applying was made easier as they supported each other throughout, with additional guidance from their class teacher.

Westpac Fiji Chief Executive, Shane Smith, says that supporting the education of women and girls was a long-term commitment for the bank.

He notes that for over 15 years, the programme had helped Fijian women and girls unlock their potential and reach their academic ambitions.

Another awardee, Saanvi Chand, a Year 8 student at Lautoka Central Primary School, attributed her success to the encouragement she received both at home and school.

She had submitted a hand-drawn poster, which took her a week to complete, while simultaneously preparing for a Women’s Day oratory competition.

Her father, Ashish Chand, who is a teacher, expresses pride in her achievements and says he hoped she would grow into a strong and independent young woman.

He urges other parents and students to apply for the grant, stating that beyond financial support, it helps build confidence, shift mindsets, and encourages goal-setting among children.

Through the Women and Girls Education Grant (WGEG) programme, Westpac said it would continue investing in education, confidence, and opportunity for young women across Fiji in 2026 and beyond.
