Kiran says only one missing child case reported over festive season

The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection says only one case of a missing child was reported during the recent festive season, and the child was safely located and reunited with their family.

This was highlighted by Minister Sashi Kiran in response to questions sent by fijivillage News, saying most missing child reports are made directly to the Fiji Police Force, with Child Welfare Officers providing support and interventions where needed.

She says such incidents often arise from miscommunication, unmet expectations, or lapses in supervision.

To address these risks, she says that Child Welfare Officers conduct assessments to guide prevention strategies and early interventions.

Kiran says under the Child Care and Protection Act 2024, child protection is a shared responsibility, and accountability for parental negligence is determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on the circumstances and available evidence.

She also highlights ongoing efforts to support street-dwelling children, including welfare patrols, food assistance, and reintegration into safe home environments in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and other partners.

Throughout the festive season, she adds that the Ministry promoted child safety messages through social media, radio programs, and awareness campaigns, urging parents, caregivers, and communities to prioritise supervision and protect children from harm.

Minister Kiran reaffirms the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring their wellbeing, especially during high-risk periods like the holidays.
