Italy recorded a momentous 23-18 victory over England at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, securing their first-ever win against England in the Six Nations after 32 previous attempts.

England, reeling from losses to Scotland and Ireland, initially looked set to bounce back with first-half tries from Tommy Freeman and Tom Roebuck, alongside two second-half penalties from Fin Smith.

However, the match swung in Italy’s favour when England’s Sam Underhill and Maro Itoje were sin-binned, allowing Leonardo Marin to score the decisive try.

The result lifts Italy above England into fourth place in the Six Nations table, keeping hopes of a top-three finish alive for the Azzurri.

England, meanwhile, remains second from the bottom, facing a potential worst-ever campaign under coach Steve Borthwick and a tough upcoming fixture against title-chasing France.

Italy’s historic victory marks a milestone in their best-ever Six Nations campaign, while England faces serious questions about the team’s direction.
