The Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry has moved quickly to address concerns after a video surfaced that Ministry of Fisheries staff based at Galoa in Navua had littered the seawall.
Minister Alitia Bainivalu confirms that immediate action was taken where a team from the Galoa Station was deployed to carry out a full clean-up of the affected seawall area.
She also apologised to nearby communities including Vunimaqo, Qarasarau, Lomary and surrounding areas.
Bainivalu says the behaviour shown does not reflect the standards expected of ministry staff.
The Minister acknowledged Bill Lockwood for bringing the matter to light and assured the public that immediate action has been taken.
The Minister has since directed the implementation of strict waste management measures across all ministry facilities.
These include proper and regular rubbish disposal systems, introduction of composting and other sustainable waste practices where possible, and strengthened accountability mechanisms to prevent a repeat of such behaviour.
