Ibrahim defies odds in aircraft engineering

Ibrahim defies odds in aircraft engineering

A passion for aviation and a determination to break barriers is driving one young woman from Vanua Levu to pursue her dreams in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Rabia Fareed Ibrahim, who is studying aircraft engineering at the Fiji National University, says it is not just about machines, it is about proving that women belong in every corner of the industry.

The 20-year-old is currently a second-year student pursuing a Certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Mechanical) (Level 4) at FNU's Bonunaqwele Campus in Nadi.

A former student of Labasa Sangam SKM College, Ibrahim says she had always been curious about machines and how they operate.

She says seeing aeroplanes and learning about the technology behind them inspired her to pursue aviation mechanical studies.

She says that understanding the critical role aircraft mechanics play in ensuring the safety and reliability of flights further motivated her to pursue the career path.

Despite her passion, Ibrahim admits that being one of the few women in her field has come with its challenges.

She says sometimes she feels she has to work harder to prove her skills and confidence in technical tasks.

However, she has remained focused on her goals, overcoming obstacles through hard work, determination and belief in her abilities.

She believes women bring valuable perspectives to aviation, contributing to innovation, teamwork and improved safety standards.
