Fiji’s health system moves into the digital age with major X-ray upgrade equipped with artificial intelligence to provide improved services to all Fijians.

The Ministry of Health says that Fiji’s public hospitals have begun benefiting from a major upgrade to their X-ray services, with old analogue machines now replaced by modern digital systems equipped with AI.

The Ministry of Health stresses that it has rolled out new digital X-ray units to replace equipment that was more than 15 years old, ending the need for manual film processing and improving the speed and quality of diagnostics across the country.

They highlighted that a total of 18 new floor- and ceiling-mounted digital machines, supplied by a leading Chinese manufacturer through a locally awarded public tender, are now being installed nationwide.

The Ministry says the new systems feature integrated AI software that supports doctors by identifying potential abnormalities, helping to deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses for patients.

They confirm that installations have already taken place at the CWM Hospital in Suva, Nausori, and Taveuni, with the remaining units being deployed to major divisional and subdivisional hospitals, as well as selected rural health facilities, to ensure equitable access.

They say this upgrade is expected to significantly reduce waiting times, improve image clarity, and strengthen patient care across Fiji’s public health network.
