The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is reviewing progress on plans to relocate communities vulnerable to the growing impacts of climate change.

Key government officials, development partners and climate experts met in Labasa earlier this week to discuss how relocation efforts can be better coordinated and strengthened.

The discussions focused on helping at-risk communities prepare for rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events.

Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, addressed members virtually, outlining key considerations for demonstrating progress and setting clear priorities for the Taskforce moving forward.

The meeting was chaired by Director of Climate Change Senivasa Waqairamasi, who led discussions focused on key decisions and practical outcomes.

She also acknowledged the continued support of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, which serves as the Secretariat to the Taskforce.

Discussions focused on strengthening the Taskforce’s role in climate relocation planning, including a review of its mandate and updates on housing design, resilience planning, and community support for vulnerable areas.

Members also received updates from partners on climate mobility projects, training programmes and funding support, while research was presented on whether communities prefer adapting in place or relocating.

The Taskforce also discussed lessons from recent visits to relocation sites in the North, highlighting the need for stronger livelihood support, cultural awareness, and greater community involvement in future relocation plans.
