As the festive season peaked, Navudi Seaqaqa livestock farmer Sarvan Kumar is making the most of the festive rush, selling 10 goats in just half a day as Labasa families prepare for holiday feasts.
Kumar says he made a special trip to Labasa to sell goats and sheep on Christmas Eve, hoping to earn enough to support his family and save for the year ahead.
He shared that prices range from $200 to $400, adding that this is the only time of year when there is high demand for his livestock, making it a crucial income opportunity.
However, he is calling on the council to support farmers by providing a designated area to sell livestock, as they currently stand in the scorching sun with no proper shelter.
Meanwhile, a Labasa farmer, who owns approximately 300 goats on his farm, says he has also managed to sell 8 to 9 goats and a sheep today.
He is urging the government to support livestock farmers with fencing materials and to help address ongoing drainage issues affecting farms during the rainy season.
