Family travels from Nadi to Suva to find affordable school shoes

Determination and sacrifice marked one family's back-to-school journey as 59-year-old Asaeli Saumaka and his wife travelled from Nadi to Suva in search of affordable and good-quality school shoes for their 13-year-old daughter, Rebecca Saumaka.

Rebecca, a student of Namaka Public School, had already completed most of her school preparations — except shoes, which her father says were too expensive in Nadi.

Saumaka, who is originally from Natobuniqio, Vugalei in Tailevu, says they made the trip to Suva hoping to find a better price and quality for their daughter’s footwear.

He says while the cost of parenting can be high, he is determined to support Rebecca’s education and future.

The proud father of eight adds that Rebecca is also preparing to return to competitive netball this year, representing her school and the Nadi team once again.

He says raising children comes with many sacrifices but also brings pride and purpose.

As parents rushed to get ready for the new school year, Meenoos Suva Manager, Shalendra Nand, says the back-to-school period was one of the busiest they have seen, especially after the $200 government grant was released just one week before school resumed.

Nand says the grant provided much-needed relief to parents, and most focused on stationery, books, and essential school items for their children.

He says they  saw a better turnover this year compared to last year at all their 11 outlets.

However, Nand says the late release of the grant created pressure for both parents and retailers, with everything happening in a rush.

Nand says they are also receiving increasing interest from rural areas like Namosi, Nadroga, and Naitasiri, with school principals requesting quality uniforms for their students.

The first term officially begins tomorrow, with students expected to return to classes from Tuesday at most schools.
