Transport operators across Fiji are being warned against imposing unauthorised fare hikes following sharp fuel price increases that have already begun impacting passengers nationwide.
Diesel price has increased by 35 percent to $2.89 per litre, while unleaded fuel has risen by 20 percent to $2.93 per litre, placing immediate pressure on public service vehicles, minibus operators and maritime transport providers.
The Consumer Council of Fiji says despite these rising costs, they stress that operators must not pass on the burden through arbitrary or excessive fare increases without proper approval.
The Council says there are already reports of passengers being overcharged.
On the Lautoka–Sigatoka route, a minibus operator allegedly increased fares to $15, nearly $3 more per passenger, without authorisation.
The Council says maritime operators have also indicated plans to raise ticket prices, with some consumers reportedly being asked to pay an additional $10.
Chief Executive Officer Seema Shandil says while the financial strain on businesses is understood, unfair pricing practices will not be tolerated.
Shandil says they understand that businesses are under pressure, however, it is not fair to pass these costs onto consumers through excessive increases.
Shandil also emphasised that there are established processes through the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for reviewing and approving fare adjustments.
She says ignoring these processes only creates confusion and hardship for ordinary Fijian.
Operators have also been cautioned against disguising fare increases as fuel surcharges or service fees, warning that such practices may be misleading and in breach of the law.
Shandil says transport providers are being urged to work closely with regulators to find sustainable solutions, while passengers are advised to remain vigilant and ensure they are paying only approved fares.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected overcharging, providing details such as vehicle registration, route and operator name.
