The Balawa community in Lautoka has installed five CCTV cameras after raising funds, aiming to improve the safety of families in the neighbourhood.

Balawa Neighbourhood Committee Secretary Shalend Singh highlights that the project represents an investment of over $3,000 fully funded by the Balawa community.

He further highlights that the funds came from member contributions, which covered the costs of the CCTV cameras, data SIMs, a monthly $25 top-up for each camera, as well as the posts and installation.

Singh says the installation of the five cameras across the Balawa Subdivision will act as a strong deterrent to would-be offenders and will support both residents and the Fiji Police Force in identifying and tracking down criminals.

He adds that the CCTV system will assist police in investigating incidents such as hit-and-runs, grab-and-run cases, or other illegal activities, with residents able to monitor their homes remotely via their phones while away.

Singh also notes that the system will be valuable to the Lautoka City Council in identifying instances of littering and addressing other public health issues.
