Yavusa Lemaki traditionally hands over ‘Big Bure’ to FNU

In a momentous cultural ceremony, the Yavusa Lemaki of the Vanua o Kabara, Lau, officially handed over the newly constructed Fiji National University (FNU) Nadi Campus ‘Big Bure’ to FNU Chancellor and Chair of Council, Semesa Druavesi Karavaki.

The traditional handover is a customary gesture by the highly skilled traditional craftsmen from the Yavusa Lemaki, to always traditionally hand over their completed work to the owners of the facility once the work is done.

The ‘Big Bure’ was jointly constructed with the FNU In-house Project Team.

FNU says in a historic event, what is set to become a focal point for cultural events, academic activities, and community engagement at the University, the ‘Big Bure’ stands as a symbol of FNU’s commitment to celebrating and integrating Fiji’s rich heritage into its educational mission.

During the ceremony, Karavaki received a traditional whale’s tooth, acknowledging the dedication and labour of the Yavusa Lemaki in completing this iconic structure.

He says the ‘Big Bure’ epitomises a traditional craft, knowledge and skill handed down from their forefathers which is their belief ordained by the Almighty God.

He also says it is a blessing.

As the first structure of its kind across FNU campuses nationwide, the ‘Big Bure’ marks a historic milestone for the University, underscoring its dedication to preserving Fiji’s cultural legacy.
