A 36-year-old Labasa market vendor has been charged after allegedly obtaining $150 through a mobile phone scam involving a fake message from a department head.

Police say the incident happened on the 23rd of March last year, where the woman received a mobile message at home, claiming to be from her department head asking for a loan of $150.

They say she told the person that she did not have enough funds in her mobile money account, and was then instructed to send the money via online bank transfer.

Police say the money was sent and withdrawn in Labasa on the same day.

The woman later reported the matter to Nabouwalu Police Station.

The woman is charged with one count of obtaining financial advantage and will appear in the Labasa Magistrates Court this afternoon.
