Rainfall over the last two weeks has brought relief to Water Authority of Fiji’s major raw water sources for the Suva-Nausori system but with it, there has also been an increase in turbidity levels.
Water Authority of Fiji says this increase in turbidity being experienced in the Waimanu River mostly affects the production levels at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant.
They say during continuous rains, the increase in turbidity in the raw water impacts water production, reservoir levels, flows, and pressures to mostly people living in elevated and far-end areas.
WAF says their current operation trends show that it takes 2 to 3 days for system recovery after a big rainfall event.
They say to improve this situation, they are currently implementing a project to interconnect the Viria Water Treatment system to the Tamavua system.
WAF says they also have in-place investment plans that will see further improvements in the service delivery during high rainfall periods in the next 2 to 3 years by upgrading of Water Treatment Plant facility and treatment capacity in Tamavua.
