SODELPA MP Mitieli Bulanauca’s motion to delete the establishment of a Register for Sex Offenders has been defeated in parliament.
While speaking on the motion, Bulanauca says we cannot have an offender’s name in the register for all of his or her life and we should give them a chance to change.
He says we should delete the establishment of this register and give people time to change to become a better person.
Bulanauca says the approach in the Bill is founded on hate, where we are hating the person but in fact we should hate the evil that is in that person.
He says the name of the offender should be removed from the register when the person changes.
Bulanauca also says we should be focusing on the problem such as what is causing people to commit sexual offences. Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says both sides of parliament have agreed that the rise in sexual offences need to be curtailed dramatically and we need to have community awareness about it.
Sayed-Khaiyum says Bulanauca is basically saying that he does not support all this.
The Attorney General says the register has been adopted in many countries as a mechanism to deter sexual offences.
Sayed-Khaiyum says Bulanauca only speaks about love and humanity when it suits him.
He says time and time again, Bulanauca has been one of the main people behind the racial and ethnic categorization in parliament.
