We need to strengthen our laws to deal with online scams – Kamikamica
National Scams Awareness Week at the Grand Pacific Hotel today

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica says we need to try and strengthen our laws to deal with online scams.

While addressing the National Scams Awareness Week at the Grand Pacific Hotel today, Kamikamica says last year Fiji was hit with probably one of the biggest scams to date, the eBay scam which actually swindled even some very high calibre Fijians, including some of them becoming agents.

He says this is why the National Scams Awareness Week was put together to actually create a national conversation.

The Deputy Prime Minister says this issue is no longer just for certain parts of the population, as it affects us all.

He says this will not be as effective if we do not start looking at the laws and start strengthening them because without that, it's guaranteed to happen again.

Kamikamica says the government can't go around settling claims for things that at the end of the day are our own individual responsibility.

He says they also need to ensure that all the consumer watchdogs and the police are well-equipped.

Kamikamica adds we must try and ensure that everybody's hard-earned money is protected.
