Drug cases crowding up hospital

Warning bells again as Saint Giles Hospital cannot cater for the amount of people admitted due to lack of space

Drug abuse among many young people is a major contributor to Saint Giles Hospital’s current capacity issues as the hospital can only assist 100 people.

That’s the comment of Saint Giles Clinical Nurse Educator Loata Gucake at the Central Division Drug-Free Awareness Campaign as she says due to the increasing number of individuals experiencing mental disorders, the hospital has become overcrowded.

Gucake says the negligence of parents has led to the abuse of drugs by youths and this has put pressure on Saint Giles Hospital.

She says they cannot cater for the amount of people admitted due to the lack of space.

Gucake says in the past, older adults were primarily admitted to the hospital, but now the majority of patients are young people.

She says the youngest female admitted is 15-years old, while the youngest male is 13-years old.

The clinical nurse also emphasised that children straying from home is often a result of parental negligence, lack of family time, and insufficient opportunities for children to share their experiences.

Gucake adds when parents ignore their children, those children will seek attention elsewhere.
