The Waratahs are treating 2022 as a new era after disappointing performances over the past 12 months.

A combination of injuries and heartbreaking defeats saw the side finish Super Rugby Australia with zero wins, eventually leading to the departure of now-former coach Rob Penney.

The Waratahs ended 2021 without a victory.

They have a new coach – Darren Coleman and this is the first time he is coaching a Super Rugby side.

The good news is that Michael Hooper is back from Japan.

He is the heart, soul and about three different organs in that side and his leadership was seriously missed by the young squad.

Hooper returns alongside Ned Hanigan and Jed Holloway and will provide some much-needed experience in the forward pack.

The Waratahs have three Wallabies under 25 in their squad.

This includes Angus Bell, Izaia Perese and Lachie Swinton.

Bell is only 21.

The Waratahs open their Super Rugby Pacific campaign against the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua on the 18th of next month.
