Veteran halfback Aaron Smith relishing the chance to captain NZ at home
All Blacks star Aaron Smith

All Blacks star Aaron Smith will be playing his 98th test match tonight when they face the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians in Dunedin but this one has extra meaning because this will be his first as captain.

The All Blacks will play the Flying Fijians after a 10-year lapse

Smith says it's going to be a special moment for him and admits he never saw it coming as his main focus in recent times has just been battling for his position in the squad.

He adds when he hit 30 years, he wanted to make the most of what years he had left.

Coach Ian Foster has no hesitation in giving his halfback the captaincy role, saying he is very proud and Smith has earned it.

Flying Fijians coach Vern Cotter says people will see some true Fijian grit, some flair and real determination tonight.

The All Blacks will play the Flying Fijians at 7.05 tonight.
