PS Poole signs Grant Agreement between the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and the British High Commission

The UK Government has donated $30,000 to the National Council for Persons with Disabilities to strengthen support for people living with disabilities.

While handing over the donation, the UK’s Deputy High Commissioner to Fiji Paul Welsh says lack of access is one of the main underlying factors of poverty in developed and developing countries.

Welsh says this is why governments need to work together to design and implement projects that bridge this divide to ensure that access to opportunities are evenly spread among citizens.

Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Jennifer Poole says the Government has made the legislative commitment so that the welfare and interests of persons with disabilities are recognised and considered at National level.

Poole says these rights include rights to education, access to health care, housing and sanitation, reasonable access to transportation, food security, safe water, and social security schemes.
